Primary area of research:
- Lipotoxic diseases, especially with respect to liver injury
- Role of the liver in systemic lipotoxic injury (e.g., vascular disease)
Related areas of research:
- Mechanisms of trans-fat induced cellular injury in relationship to the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis
Summary of cardiovascular research:
We have established a mouse model of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis based on feeding mice a high trans-fat diet. Through its role in synthesizing, metabolizing, and secreting lipids, the liver plays a central role in lipid metabolism. Although our work focuses specifically on the mechanisms of liver injury during trans-fat feeding, the metabolic changes that we have observed (hypercholesterolemia, hepatic insulin resistance) have broader implications, especially with respect to cardiovascular disease, that warrant further investigation.
