Edwin Antony, Ph.D., Professor of Biochemistry, received an NIH supplement to purchase a Mass Photometer from Refeyn, Inc. This instrument measures the mass of single molecules and can help determine the composition of complex samples. In addition, the instrument can provide information about the structure and function of proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, or sugars.
In addition, Dr. Antony also received funding from the Department of Energy to purchase a Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence (TIRF) microscope for related anaerobic investigations. TIRF microscopy uses an evanescent wave for fluorophore excitation, which makes imaging of membrane-associated processes at high resolution possible.
